Welcome to Glastonbury Community Watch
Glastonbury Community Watch was launched in March 2005.
The Action against Business Crime Unit of the Home Office Awarded Glastonbury the Safer Business Award in recognition of the successful multi agency and community initiatives, which bound the town together, to address crime and anti -social behaviour on 30th June 2005. Glastonbury is the first small town of its size to be awarded this status which recognises that although not perfect, the area has taken significant steps to improve the business and retail environment.
Richard Barrons made the presentation on behalf of the Home Office,
He said:
“This is an award that is not given lightly. It recognises a great deal of hard work, determination, commitment and support from all the key players who have a responsibility to ensure that Glastonbury
remains safe, attractive and prosperous for the customers who visit, the staff who work here and residents who live here.”
Since the group began it has experienced great success – all generated by people wanting a common goal – in this case for Glastonbury to be a safe and happy place to be regardless of whether you work here, live here or come to enjoy our many attractions.
In 2006 Community Watch won the National Partnership Excellence awards in the Category Promoting Community Safety and infact was judged to be the National project of the year. Winning awards are great but this group is all about working together to make a difference for Glastonbury. That is exactly what the group has been able to achieve. The member’s link together extremely well and through the last three years we have been able to get our radio network in the two Police response vehicles used in the area and a base station based at the CCTV centre which enables the operators to hear what is developing and to ensure that we have the picture we need.
The committee is dedicated and the members supportive and together we are constantly thinking of new initiatives to support our local businesses. Two new projects are currently being developed, which are currently under wraps, but soon, very soon you will be able to read all about them here.
